Children's parties are the most fun brief we get and the most misunderstood. The theme matters far less than most parents expect, and the layout matters far more. Here are the ten concepts Lagos parents are booking most this season, and the practical bit at the end that actually decides whether the party works.
1. Afro-princess fairy tale
Our most requested theme, and deservedly so. Gold, deep jewel tones, layered fabrics, a proper throne chair, crowns as favours. Children see themselves in the story rather than in an imported one, and it photographs like a portrait session.
2. Superhero street
Rather than one franchise on repeat, a city-block backdrop with skyline cut-outs, comic-panel signage and bold primary colour. It lets several children arrive as different heroes without anybody feeling like the wrong guest, and the backdrop does most of the visual work.
3. Safari and savannah
Warm neutrals, real greenery, raffia and woven textures, animal figures at child height. It is one of the few themes that looks genuinely good in photographs of the adults too, which parents appreciate more than they admit.
4. Under the sea
Blues and teals, suspended jellyfish, layered fabric waves, iridescent finishes. Ceiling-heavy, so it needs a venue with some height — but it converts an ordinary hall more completely than almost anything else on this list.
5. Little chef / bake shop
Aprons and chef hats as favours, a decorated station where children actually decorate cupcakes or small chin chin. The décor and the activity are the same thing, which is efficient and keeps children busy for a solid forty minutes.
6. Space and rockets
Deep navy, metallics, planets at varying heights, a rocket as the photo anchor. Works beautifully with lighting — it is one of the few children's themes that gets better as the afternoon darkens.
7. Garden tea party
Pastels, real flowers, low tables, proper little chairs. Best for smaller guest lists and younger children, and lovely in an outdoor Lagos garden in the drier months.
8. Dinosaur expedition
Greens and earth tones, oversized foliage, a dig area, dinosaurs at scale. Perennially popular with four to seven year olds and reliably chaotic in the best way.
9. Football club
Club colours throughout, pitch-marked floor runner, scoreboard backdrop, jersey-number place settings. Enormous in Lagos, and it scales up easily for a bigger guest list.
10. Rainbow and balloons, done properly
The default that gets dismissed and should not be. A large sculpted balloon installation — an arch, a cloud, an organic garland climbing a corner — is genuinely striking at scale, costs less than most themed builds, and every child under eight is delighted by it.
Pick one wall and make it excellent. Every photograph from a children's party ends up in front of the same backdrop.
What actually makes a children's party work
After a great many of these, the theme is not the deciding factor. These are:
- One strong focal wall. The cake table and backdrop together. This is where every photo is taken, so concentrate the budget there and keep the rest simple.
- Decorate at their height. Adults design at eye level and children live a metre below it. The best details belong low.
- Nothing fragile within reach. Obvious, routinely ignored. Glass, wire, small detachable parts and open flame all belong above 1.5 metres or nowhere.
- Keep the floor clear. Children run. Leave them a proper route between the entrance, the food and the activity, and do not put a centrepiece in it.
- Match the theme to the child, not to the feed. A four-year-old will be far happier in a theme they chose badly than in a beautiful one they did not.
- Plan the shade. For any Lagos outdoor party between eleven and three, shade is not decoration, it is the whole event.
A note on age
Under three, the party is genuinely for the parents — design for photographs and comfortable seating. Four to seven is the sweet spot where a committed theme really lands. Eight and up, children get self-conscious about "babyish" and you are better off with something stylish and less literal: colour, lighting and a great photo corner.
